“I made him [Jackson] a map of McDowell and vicinity, showing the enemy’s position, as in full view before us.” Hotchkiss, May 8, 1862. (LOC)
Johnson’s regiments now began to come up. The 52nd Virginia Infantry was posted on the left of the hill, and soon began skirmishing with the 73rd Ohio Infantry. Milroy sent two more companies of the 73rd Ohio Infantry, two companies of the 32nd Ohio Infantry, and a company of the 75th Ohio Infantry across the river as additional skirmishers. Jackson took little notice of the small-scale fighting that was going on around the hill, and discussed with Johnson his plan to try and find an alternate route across the river in order to stage his own attack on Milroy the next day. He tasked Johnson with securing the hill, while he continued to explore ways to get behind Milroy, never expecting the Federal commander to take the offensive.
About 3pm, responding to reports that the Rebels were attempting to place artillery on the hill, Milroy ordered the remaining companies of the 25th and 75th Ohio Infantry that had not previously been involved in the skirmishing, 16 in all, across the river and up the hill. They advanced “up a precipitous mountain side upon an adversary protected by intrenchments and the natural formation of the mountain.” They went in with limited support from Milroy’s main artillery batteries, 18 guns in all, which remained on the west side of the river. The artillerymen dug deep trenches behind the guns in an attempt to elevate the barrels high enough to reach the top of the hill, but with minimal effect. The 2nd West Virginia Infantry crossed the river and occupied Hull’s Hill, north of the pike.
